You tapped the bell, picked a setting, and still missed the upload. YouTube notification settings are spread across three separate layers, and one wrong switch in any of them silently cancels the other two.

In this guide:

  • Where each YouTube notification setting lives
  • All vs Personalized vs None, in YouTube's own words
  • The two settings that make alerts look broken
  • The exact setup that misses the fewest uploads
  • What no setting can change in 2026

Where YouTube notification settings live

YouTube notification settings sit in three layers, and an alert only reaches you when all three agree. Most people fix one layer and assume the job is done.

  1. The channel bell. Next to the Subscribed button on every channel. It decides whether that one channel can notify you at all.
  2. Your account settings. Tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Notifications. This controls which kinds of alerts your whole account gets.
  3. Your device. Your phone's system settings or your browser's site permission decide whether YouTube may show anything on screen.

The first two follow your Google account to every device. The third is local, so a perfect setup on your phone does nothing for your laptop.

The channel bell: All vs Personalized vs None

The bell's three options decide how much of a channel's output YouTube will even consider sending you. YouTube Help defines them this way:

  • All: "mobile, web, or inbox notifications for long-form uploads and live streams."
  • Personalized: "notifications for some uploads, Shorts, and live streams." YouTube adds that the definition of personalized "differs by user."
  • None: no notifications from that channel.

Personalized is the default when you subscribe. It hands the decision to YouTube, which picks alerts based on how you watch. For a channel that posts once a month, like Veritasium or Mark Rober, that can mean months without a single alert.

All is not a guarantee

The same Help page says: "If you have selected All and haven't watched or engaged with the channel in a while, you'll only receive notifications for that channel inside the app." No push, no banner. We explain why in not getting notifications with the bell on.

The account settings: what each YouTube notification toggle does

The Settings, then Notifications screen controls every alert type on your account at once. It overrides every channel bell, so one toggle here can silence all of them.

  • Subscriptions: alerts about activity from channels you subscribe to. If this is off, no bell setting matters.
  • Recommended videos: alerts for videos YouTube thinks you will like. Turning this off cuts noise without touching your subscriptions.
  • Activity toggles: replies to your comments, mentions, and activity on your own channel.
  • Email notifications: a separate section for emails. It no longer includes new-upload emails, because YouTube shut those down on August 13, 2020. The full story is in did YouTube remove email notifications.

On youtube.com, the same page also has a desktop notifications switch for your browser. It only works if the browser has permission too, which we cover in YouTube desktop notifications not working.

Scheduled digest and quiet hours: the settings that fake a bug

Two YouTube notification settings make alerts look broken when they are working exactly as designed. Check both before anything else.

Scheduled digest bundles a day's push notifications into one daily notification at a time you pick, per YouTube Help. A morning upload then waits until your digest time. That is fine for casual viewing and useless for a premiere.

Disable sounds & vibrations silences alerts from 10 PM to 8 AM by default. The notifications still arrive, just silently. A video that drops at 11 PM gets buried under the next morning's tray. You can change the start and end times, or switch it off.

Phone and browser settings that override YouTube

Your device can block every YouTube notification before YouTube's settings get a vote. Check this layer if nothing arrives at all.

On iPhone, open Settings, then Notifications, then YouTube, and allow notifications with banners. On Android, open Settings, then Apps, then YouTube, then Notifications, and make sure the channel categories are on. Focus modes and Do Not Disturb schedules silence YouTube just like quiet hours do. Step-by-step fixes for both are in YouTube notifications on iPhone and Android.

On a computer, youtube.com needs the browser's notification permission, and the browser must be open. Also confirm you are signed into the same Google account on every device, because settings follow the account.

The best YouTube notification settings for never missing an upload

The best YouTube notification settings for catching every upload take about two minutes to apply. Run this checklist once:

  1. Set the bell to All on every channel you care about.
  2. Turn Subscriptions on under Settings, then Notifications.
  3. Turn Scheduled digest off.
  4. Shorten or disable quiet hours if your channels post late at night.
  5. Allow YouTube in your phone or browser notification settings.
  6. Watch those channels now and then, so YouTube keeps scoring you as active.

Test it on a busy channel

Set the bell to All on a channel that posts often, such as Marques Brownlee, and wait for the next upload. If that alert arrives, your settings work, and any gap elsewhere is YouTube's filtering.

What no YouTube notification setting can change

Three limits sit above every setting, so a perfect setup still misses uploads. None of them has a toggle.

The setting YouTube removed: email upload alerts

Your YouTube notification settings can be perfect and still lose to the filter. The one alert YouTube cannot filter is the one it no longer offers: an email for every upload. Sublark brings it back.

Search a channel on Sublark, enter your email, and you get an email as soon as Sublark detects a new upload, usually within the hour. There is no bell mode, no digest, no quiet hours, no daily cap, and no activity score. It is free for viewers. You can find any channel in seconds, and our guide to YouTube email notifications compares every method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are YouTube notification settings?

YouTube notification settings live in two places. For a single channel, tap the bell next to the Subscribed button on that channel and pick All, Personalized, or None. For your whole account, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Notifications. That screen holds the subscription and recommendation toggles, scheduled digest, quiet hours, and email options. Your phone or browser also has its own notification permission for YouTube, and it overrides both.

What is the difference between All and Personalized notifications on YouTube?

According to YouTube Help, All sends mobile, web, or inbox notifications for a channel's long-form uploads and live streams. Personalized sends notifications for only some uploads, Shorts, and live streams, and YouTube says the definition of personalized differs by user. In practice, Personalized lets YouTube choose which uploads are worth an alert based on your viewing. If you never want to miss a channel, All is the only bell setting worth choosing.

What does scheduled digest do on YouTube?

Scheduled digest bundles all of the push notifications YouTube would send you in a day into a single daily notification, delivered at a time you choose. It is handy if alerts distract you, but it also means an upload from the morning will not reach you until digest time. If you rely on YouTube alerts to catch premieres or live streams as they start, keep scheduled digest turned off in Settings, then Notifications.

Why do I get no YouTube notifications at night?

YouTube's Disable sounds and vibrations setting silences notifications between 10 PM and 8 AM by default. The notifications still arrive, but they land silently, so they are easy to miss in a crowded tray the next morning. You can change the start and end times or switch the setting off under your profile picture, then Settings, then Notifications. Your phone's own Do Not Disturb or Focus schedule can silence YouTube in the same way.

Can I get YouTube upload notifications by email?

Not from YouTube. The Email notifications section in YouTube settings still exists, but YouTube stopped emailing subscribers about new uploads on August 13, 2020. Sublark fills that gap. Search a channel on sublark.com, enter your email address, and you get an email as soon as Sublark detects a new upload, usually within the hour. It is free for viewers and works on any device, with no app and no bell to configure.

Add the one setting YouTube cannot override

Search any YouTube channel on Sublark, enter your email, and get an alert within the hour of every upload. No bell modes, no digest, no daily cap.
