YouTube desktop notifications not working on Chrome? Here is why browser alerts fail on a computer in 2026, the fixes in order, and what works instead.

Your phone pings for YouTube uploads just fine, but the computer you actually watch on stays completely silent. Desktop notifications run on their own separate chain of switches, and any single one of them can kill the whole thing.
In this guide:
- The two different things "desktop notifications" means on youtube.com
- The Chrome site permission almost everyone is missing
- Windows and macOS settings that block alerts before YouTube gets a say
- Why a perfectly configured browser still misses uploads in 2026

Why YouTube desktop notifications break differently than phone alerts
YouTube desktop notifications fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your phone, because a computer delivers alerts through a browser instead of an app. On a phone, the YouTube app holds the notification permission. On a desktop, Chrome holds it, and youtube.com has to ask Chrome for it separately.
That means every fix you already applied on your phone counts for nothing here. The bell setting carries across your account, but permission, delivery, and display are all handled locally by the browser and the operating system.
So work the desktop chain in its own order: site permission, then operating system, then the settings inside YouTube. If you also need the phone side, we cover that in fixing YouTube notifications on iPhone and Android. For every failure mode across every device, start at our hub on YouTube notifications not working.
"Desktop notifications" means two different things on youtube.com
Most reports of broken YouTube desktop notifications are actually two different features being confused. Knowing which one you mean cuts the troubleshooting in half.
The first is the in-page bell tray, the bell icon in the top right corner of youtube.com. It is a list inside the web page. It only updates while a YouTube tab is loaded, and it never pops up over your other windows.
The second is a browser push notification, the small banner your operating system shows in the corner of the screen. That one requires an explicit permission grant. If you have never seen a YouTube banner appear over your spreadsheet, you almost certainly never granted it, and no amount of bell-clicking will change that.

Fix 1: give youtube.com permission to send browser notifications
The single most common cause of missing YouTube desktop alerts is a Notifications permission that was never granted, or was dismissed once and silently remembered. Chrome only asks once, and a stray click on the X counts as a no.
Open Chrome and go to chrome://settings/content/notifications. Look through the not-allowed list for youtube.com. If it is there, remove it or switch it to Allow, then reload youtube.com. You can also click the icon just left of the web address, open site settings, and set Notifications to Allow for that tab.
While you are in there, check Chrome's quieter-messaging option. When it is on, Chrome suppresses the permission prompt entirely, so a site you meant to allow never gets the chance to ask. Microsoft Edge uses the same engine and the same two settings.
How to test it without waiting for an upload
Pick a channel that posts several times a week, such as Fireship or Marques Brownlee, set its bell to All, and leave a YouTube tab open for a day. If a banner appears, permission is working and your problem is further down the chain.

Fix 2: Windows and macOS block Chrome before YouTube gets a say
Your operating system has the final word on whether any Chrome banner ever reaches your screen, and it overrides everything YouTube and Chrome agree on. This is the layer people skip.
On Windows 11, open Settings, then System, then Notifications. Confirm notifications are on globally and that Google Chrome is allowed in the app list. Then check Do Not Disturb, plus the automatic rules underneath it, which can silence everything while you are duplicating your display, playing a game, or running an app full screen.
On macOS, open System Settings, then Notifications, select Google Chrome, and allow notifications with the style set to Banners or Alerts. Then check your Focus modes and the option that mutes alerts while you mirror or share the screen. Safari handles web push differently and is the least dependable desktop path, so use Chrome or Edge if you want browser alerts at all.

Fix 3: the settings inside YouTube that switch desktop alerts off
Three settings inside YouTube itself can disable desktop alerts even when Chrome and your operating system are both configured correctly. Check all three in one pass.
First, the account toggle. On youtube.com, open Settings, then Notifications, and make sure the desktop notifications option is on along with Subscriptions. This toggle is separate from anything in the mobile app.
Second, the bell mode. Open each channel, click the bell, and choose All instead of Personalized. Personalized hands the decision back to YouTube, which then skips most uploads. A channel like Veritasium that posts once a month is easy to leave on the wrong setting for half a year.
Third, the browser profile. Each Chrome profile keeps its own cookies and its own signed-in Google account, so the account watching Linus Tech Tips on your phone may not be the account signed in on your desktop. Notifications follow the account, not the machine.

Why a perfectly configured browser still misses uploads in 2026
You can grant every permission, clear every Focus mode, and still miss uploads, because three limits sit above anything your computer controls. None of them has a setting you can change.
The first is structural: browser push needs the browser running. Quit Chrome and there is nothing there to receive the alert. Chrome on Windows offers a background-apps setting that keeps delivery alive after you close the window, but on macOS, quitting means silence.
The second is YouTube's cap of 3 notifications per channel in any 24 hours. If MrBeast posts a Short, a video, and a live stream in one afternoon, the fourth thing does not reach you.
The third is the biggest. Since February 11, 2026, YouTube stops sending push notifications to subscribers it scores as inactive for a channel, even with the bell on All, as reported by PPC Land and 9to5Google. The 2025 experiment behind it reached only about 30% of opted-in subscribers. We unpack that shift in why YouTube stopped notifying you, the bell-on case in not getting notifications with the bell on, and the timing problem in why alerts arrive hours late.

The tell for the inactive filter
If desktop alerts work for the channels you watch weekly but never for the one you have not opened in a month, your browser is fine. That pattern is YouTube's engagement scoring, and it follows your account across every device you own.
The alert that does not depend on your browser being open
The reliable desktop fix is an alert YouTube does not deliver, because a permission you never have to grant is a permission that cannot be revoked. Email is that alert, and it lands whether Chrome is open, closed, or uninstalled.
Sublark watches the channels you choose and emails you as soon as it detects an upload, usually within the hour. There is no site permission, no Focus mode, no browser profile, no 3-per-day cap, and no engagement score deciding whether you deserve the message. The email simply waits in your inbox until you read it.
YouTube itself ran email upload alerts until it shut them down on August 13, 2020, citing an open rate under 0.1%. Setup now takes one step: search a channel on Sublark, enter your email, done. It is free for viewers, you can find any channel in seconds, and the full method comparison lives in our guide to YouTube email notifications.

3 of 10 emails opened beats 3 of 10 pushes delivered
A browser notification has to survive a permission, an operating system, a Focus mode, and YouTube's own filter before it appears. An email is sent every time and waits for you on whatever screen you happen to open next.

Why are my YouTube notifications not working on Chrome?
Chrome will not show a YouTube alert unless youtube.com holds the Notifications permission for that exact browser profile. Open chrome://settings/content/notifications and check whether youtube.com sits under the not-allowed list. If the permission is fine, the block is usually one layer up: Windows Do Not Disturb or a macOS Focus mode is swallowing every alert Chrome sends. Fix the site permission first, then the operating system, then the toggles inside YouTube.
How do I turn on YouTube desktop notifications?
Sign in to youtube.com in the browser you actually watch in, open Settings, then Notifications, and switch on the desktop notifications option along with Subscriptions. Chrome then asks for permission, and you have to click Allow. Finally, set the bell on each channel to All rather than Personalized, because Personalized lets YouTube decide which uploads are worth an alert. All three layers have to line up before a single alert reaches your screen.
Do YouTube desktop notifications work when the browser is closed?
Usually not. Browser push notifications are delivered by the browser, so if Chrome is fully quit, there is nothing running to receive or display the alert. Chrome on Windows has a setting that keeps background apps running after you close the window, which preserves delivery, but many people have it switched off. On macOS, quitting Chrome ends notifications until you reopen it. An email alert has no such requirement.
Why do I get YouTube notifications on my phone but not on my computer?
The two use completely separate delivery chains. Your phone relies on the YouTube app and the system notification permission. Your computer relies on a browser permission for youtube.com, the desktop notifications toggle in your YouTube account settings, and the operating system letting Chrome display anything at all. A different Google account signed into that browser profile is another common cause, since notifications follow the account, not the device.
Is there a way to get YouTube upload alerts on a computer without the browser?
Yes. Email is the one alert that does not depend on a browser being open, a permission being granted, or a Focus mode being off. Sublark watches the channels you pick and emails you as soon as it detects an upload, usually within the hour. The message sits in your inbox until you read it, on your desktop, your laptop, or your phone. It is free for viewers and needs no app or extension.
