What does the blue dot mean on YouTube?
The blue dot on YouTube means a channel you follow has posted something you haven't opened yet. YouTube Help's guide for the Android and iPhone apps just calls it "a dot." On screen, it is a small blue circle.
Say Veritasium posts a new video while you're at work. That evening, its name in your subscriptions list carries a blue dot. You tap the channel, and the dot disappears.
The dot is personal to your account, and it only covers channels you subscribe to. If subscriptions are new to you, start with what happens when you subscribe to a YouTube channel.

Where the blue dot shows up on YouTube
The blue dot appears in your list of subscribed channels, in the YouTube app and on youtube.com. Where that list lives depends on your device.
- YouTube app (Android, iPhone, iPad): YouTube Help's phone guide says to tap Subs in the top bar of the Home tab, then All to see your channels. A dot sits next to any channel with new content. Older layouts keep Subscriptions in the bottom bar. YouTube began testing the move to the top of the screen in May 2026.
- youtube.com on a computer: open the left-hand menu, which YouTube calls the Guide. Channels under Subscriptions show a dot beside their names when there's something new. YouTube Help's computer guide doesn't describe this dot, but desktop users have asked about it on Reddit for years.
If a channel is live streaming, YouTube Help says you'll see the word Live next to its name. To see every channel you follow in one list, read how to manage YouTube subscriptions.

Blue dot but no new video? 4 likely reasons
A blue dot with nothing new to watch usually means the "new content" isn't a regular video, or your list hasn't caught up. YouTube doesn't publish the rule behind the dot, so treat these as likely causes, not an official list.
- The new thing isn't a long video. YouTube Help says "new content," not "new video." A Short, a post or a live stream that already ended may be what lit the dot.
- A filter is hiding it. YouTube Help says the phone app shows categories at the top of your subscriptions page to filter what you see. If one is selected, switch back to the full feed.
- You watched it on another account. The dot belongs to the account you're signed in to. If you watched while signed in to a second account, or signed out, this account may still count it as new.
- The list is out of date. The dot can lag behind what you've watched. Pull down to refresh, or close and reopen the app. Reddit threads about dots that won't clear go back years, so a stuck dot is common and harmless.
Are videos actually missing from your feed, not just dots? That's a different problem, covered in YouTube subscription feed not showing all videos.

How to clear a blue dot on YouTube
To clear a blue dot on YouTube, open the channel it belongs to. YouTube Help lists no setting to hide the dots or clear them all at once, so you clear them one channel at a time.
- Open your subscriptions list. In the app, tap Subs (or Subscriptions), then All. On a computer, use the left-hand menu.
- Tap the channel with the dot. Opening the channel page, or the new video, Short or post on it, normally clears the marker.
- Refresh. Pull down in the app or reload the page. The dot should be gone.
- Still stuck? Close and reopen the app, update it, and check that you're signed in to the right account. A dot that survives all of this is a display glitch, not a hidden video.

Other YouTube dots, rings and labels
The blue dot has a few cousins on YouTube, and each means something different.
| What you see | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Blue dot next to a channel name | Subscriptions list (app and computer) | New content you haven't caught up on |
| The word "Live" next to a channel name | Subscriptions list in the app | The channel is live streaming now |
| Red ring around a profile picture, labeled LIVE | Home and other spots in the app | The channel is streaming; tap to join |
| Red number on the Notification bell | Top of the app or youtube.com | New notifications waiting in your inbox |
The "Live" label comes from the same YouTube Help page as the dot. The red ring arrived in February 2022, as 9to5google and Pocketnow reported. Tapping a ringed picture "will immediately send viewers into that ongoing live stream," per 9to5google. If live alerts are what you're missing, see YouTube live stream notifications not working.
The red number on the bell counts what's waiting in your YouTube inbox notifications, where YouTube also parks upload alerts it decides not to push.

Blue dot but no notification? Why the dot isn't an alert
The blue dot and the notification bell are separate systems, so a dot doesn't mean YouTube told you about the upload. The dot waits in your list until you open YouTube. Push alerts depend on the channel's bell, which skips uploads on purpose.
Three rules explain most of the gap:
- New subscriptions start on Personalized. YouTube Help says, "When you subscribe to a channel, you'll automatically get personalized notifications." That means some uploads, not all. You can change it per channel in your YouTube notification settings.
- Inactive subscribers get inbox-only alerts. YouTube's phone guide says that if your bell is on All and you "haven't watched or engaged with the channel in a while, you'll only receive notifications for that channel inside the app." The rule became permanent on April 21, 2026, per ppc.land. More in why YouTube stopped notifying you.
- There's a daily cap. YouTube Help says, "Viewers can get a maximum of 3 notifications from each channel in a 24 hour period." See the 3-notifications-per-day limit for the details.
So a channel can show a blue dot and a silent inbox entry, with no buzz on your phone. If alerts are failing more broadly, use the full checklist in YouTube notifications not working.
The dot can't come find you
The blue dot only exists inside YouTube. If you don't open the app, nothing tells you that a favorite channel posted.

Get an email instead of hunting for blue dots
The most reliable way to know a channel posted is an alert that comes to you, not a dot you have to find. Sublark emails you when a channel you follow uploads a new video, usually within the hour. There's no app and no Google sign-in, and it's free for viewers.
Setup takes about a minute:
- Search for the channel by name, or by @handle. You can also go straight to a channel page like Mark Rober, Marques Brownlee or MrBeast.
- Enter your email address. New uploads from that channel now land in your inbox.

Sublark watches for new public videos only, so a channel's text posts won't send an email. For those, the blue dot is still your guide.
Stop checking for dots

FAQ
What does the blue dot mean on YouTube?
It means a channel you subscribe to has new content you haven't caught up on. YouTube Help's phone guide says: "When a channel you subscribe to has new content, you'll see a dot next to the channel name." You'll see it in your subscriptions channel list in the app, and beside channel names in the left-hand menu on a computer. Opening the channel clears it. The dot is a marker, not a notification, so it never alerts you on its own.
Why is there a blue dot on YouTube but no new video?
YouTube Help says the dot means "new content," not "new video," and YouTube doesn't publish the full rule behind it. The new item may be a Short, a post or a live stream that has already ended. A category filter at the top of your subscriptions page can also hide it. You may have watched it while signed in to another account. Sometimes the list is just out of date, so refresh it, or close and reopen the app.
How do I get rid of the blue dot on YouTube?
Open the channel. Tap or click its name in your subscriptions list, look at what's new, then refresh the list. That normally clears the dot. If it stays, close and reopen the app, update it, and check that you're signed in to the right account. YouTube Help lists no setting to hide the dots or clear them all at once, so you clear them one channel at a time. A dot that survives all of that is a display glitch.
Does the blue dot on YouTube mean someone is online?
No. On YouTube, the blue dot is about content, not people. It means a channel you subscribe to has posted something new since you last caught up. YouTube does not show whether a creator or a viewer is online. The closest signal is live streaming: YouTube Help says the word "Live" appears next to a channel's name while it streams, and in the app a red ring can appear around its profile picture.
What does the red circle around a YouTube profile picture mean?
It means the channel is live streaming right now. YouTube added the ring to its mobile apps in February 2022. The ring is red, it is labeled LIVE, and tapping the profile picture takes you straight into the stream. In your subscriptions list, the same channel shows the word "Live" next to its name, according to YouTube Help. If the ring is gone, the stream has ended, and a replay may be on the channel.
Why did I see a blue dot but get no YouTube notification?
The dot and the bell are separate systems. The dot only marks new content in your subscriptions list. Push alerts depend on each channel's bell, which starts on Personalized, so YouTube sends only some uploads. Since April 21, 2026, subscribers on All who haven't watched a channel in about a month get inbox-only alerts, and YouTube caps alerts at 3 per channel per 24 hours. Set the bell to All for favorites, or add an email alert.
