The alert you never got probably did arrive. It went to YouTube's in-app notification inbox, not to your lock screen, and YouTube does not tell you it made that switch.
In this guide:
- Where the YouTube notification inbox lives
- Why alerts land there instead of your phone
- How to clear and delete YouTube notifications
- Whether YouTube keeps a notification history
- How to get upload alerts in the inbox you actually check

Where YouTube inbox notifications live
YouTube inbox notifications live behind the bell icon, on every device. YouTube Help says to "tap the Notification bell at the top of your screen to find updates from channels you're subscribed to and other content."
- Phone or tablet: open the YouTube app and tap the bell at the top right of the home screen.
- Computer: open youtube.com and click the bell at the top of the page.
- Opening an item: tap or click any notification to jump to the video, comment, or post.
The inbox belongs to your Google account, not your device. Your phone and laptop show the same list, as long as you are signed in to the same account.

Why YouTube alerts land in the inbox instead of your phone
YouTube now routes alerts for channels you rarely watch to the inbox only. This is the February 2026 bell change, and it is the most common reason an upload alert "never came."
YouTube Help states it plainly: "If you have selected All and haven't watched or engaged with the channel in a while, you'll only receive notifications for that channel inside the app." PPC Land reported the rule became permanent on February 11, 2026, and that the in-app inbox "continues to receive all notifications regardless of engagement status."
So the bell still works, in a narrow sense. It just stopped reaching your lock screen.
Push vs inbox
A push notification appears on your lock screen or desktop. An inbox notification sits quietly in the bell list until you open YouTube and look. The full story of the switch is in why did YouTube stop notifying me.

What else fills your YouTube notification inbox
The YouTube notification inbox mixes subscription alerts with several other kinds of alerts. That mix is why upload alerts are easy to miss once they get there.
- Uploads and live streams from channels you subscribe to, based on each channel's bell setting.
- Recommended videos from channels you do not subscribe to. YouTube Help says you "may get personalized recommended video notifications" from them.
- Comment activity, such as replies to your comments and mentions.
- Personalized highlights from subscribed channels, even with the bell off. YouTube Help warns you "may still get occasional highlights."
A single upload from Veritasium can end up buried under a dozen recommendations. That buried alert is still technically "delivered."

How to clear YouTube notifications
You clear YouTube notifications one at a time. YouTube has no button to wipe the whole inbox at once.
- Open the bell list in the app or on youtube.com.
- Tap the three-dot menu next to the notification you want gone.
- Choose Hide this notification.
Opening the bell list also clears the red unread count on the bell icon. The items stay in the list, but the badge stops nagging you.
Hiding is not muting
Hiding removes one item. The same channel can fill the list again tomorrow. To stop an alert type for good, cut it at the source, which the next section covers.

How to delete YouTube notifications for good
The only lasting way to delete YouTube notifications is to stop the ones you do not want from arriving. Three switches do most of the work, all under your profile picture, then Settings, then Notifications, per YouTube Help.
- Recommended videos: turn this off to remove alerts from channels you never subscribed to.
- Channel settings: set the bell to None on channels you no longer care about.
- Activity toggles: switch off comment replies and mentions if you do not need them.
Keep Subscriptions on. Turning it off removes every upload alert, including the ones you want. Our guide to YouTube notification settings explains every toggle on that screen.

Does YouTube keep a notification history?
The bell list is YouTube's only notification history, and it is not a full archive. It shows recent alerts, and YouTube Help does not say how long an item stays.
For uploads, the Subscriptions feed is the better history. YouTube Help points viewers there to "see recently uploaded videos from channels you're subscribed to." It lists every recent video in order, whether or not an alert fired.
On Android, the phone's own notification history can show push alerts you swiped away. It only records alerts that reached your phone, so it will never show an inbox-only alert.

Why checking the YouTube inbox is not a real fix
Checking the YouTube inbox only works if you already opened YouTube, which defeats the point of a notification. An alert that waits for you to show up cannot tell you when a premiere starts.
Two more limits sit on top of the inactive filter:
- YouTube sends at most 3 notifications per channel in 24 hours. If MrBeast posts a video, a Short, and a stream, the next drop goes silent. See the 3-notifications-per-day limit.
- One creator measured bell alerts reaching about 30% of opted-in subscribers during YouTube's 2025 test.
If your bell is set to All and alerts still never reach your phone, walk through not getting notifications with the bell on. For every other cause, start at our hub on YouTube notifications not working.

Get upload alerts in the inbox you already check
YouTube inbox notifications wait inside the app. Your email inbox is the one you check anyway. Sublark sends upload alerts there.
Search a channel on Sublark, enter your email address, and you get an email as soon as Sublark detects a new upload, usually within the hour. There is no activity score, no daily cap, and no app to open. It works the same for a channel with long gaps between videos, like Mark Rober, as for a busy one like Marques Brownlee.
It is free for viewers. You can find any channel in seconds, and our guide to YouTube email notifications compares every method.
Put upload alerts where you already look
Pick a channel once and get an email within the hour of every upload, whether or not YouTube thinks you are active.

Where are my YouTube inbox notifications?
YouTube inbox notifications live behind the bell icon. In the YouTube app, tap the bell at the top right of the home screen. On youtube.com, click the bell at the top of the page. The list shows alerts from channels you subscribe to, recommended videos, and replies to your comments. Tap any item to open the video, comment, or post. The inbox is tied to your Google account, so you see the same list on every signed-in device.
Why do my YouTube notifications only show up in the app?
Since February 11, 2026, YouTube stops push notifications to subscribers who chose All on a channel but have not watched or engaged with it in a while. YouTube Help says those viewers will only receive notifications for that channel inside the app, under the bell. Nothing is broken on your phone. YouTube decided you were inactive for that channel. Watching the channel again can restore push alerts, but YouTube does not publish how long that takes.
How do I clear all YouTube notifications at once?
You cannot. YouTube has no button to clear the whole notification list at once. You can hide individual items by tapping the three-dot menu next to a notification and choosing Hide this notification. Opening the list clears the unread badge on the bell. To keep the list short for good, cut the sources instead: turn off Recommended videos in Settings, then Notifications, and set the bell to None on channels you no longer care about.
Can I see my YouTube notification history?
Partly. The bell list is YouTube's only notification history, and it keeps recent alerts rather than a full archive. YouTube Help does not say how long items stay. For uploads, the Subscriptions feed is a better history, because it lists recent videos from every channel you follow in order. On Android, your phone's own notification history setting can also show alerts you swiped away, if you turned it on before they arrived.
Can I get YouTube notifications in my email inbox instead?
Not from YouTube. YouTube stopped emailing subscribers about new uploads on August 13, 2020. Sublark brings that back. Search a channel on sublark.com, enter your email address, and you get an email as soon as Sublark detects a new upload, usually within the hour. There is no activity filter, no daily cap, and no app to open. It is free for viewers and works for any public channel.
Get uploads in the inbox you actually check
Search any YouTube channel on Sublark, enter your email, and get an alert within the hour of every upload. No bell list to dig through.
