Unlisted and private both hide a YouTube video, but they hide it from different people. Neither one tells your subscribers a thing, and that detail should shape how you stage your next launch.

Unlisted vs private YouTube videos at a glance
Unlisted vs private YouTube videos share one trait: nobody stumbles onto them. The difference is the link. Anyone holding an unlisted link can watch, while a private video stays locked to the people you invite.
Here is the comparison from YouTube Help, with public videos added for reference.
| Feature | Private | Unlisted | Public |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can watch | You and people you choose | Anyone with the link | Anyone |
| Link can be shared | No | Yes | Yes |
| Shows in search, related videos and recommendations | No | No | Yes |
| Posted on your channel | No | No | Yes |
| Shows in subscribers' feed | No | No | Yes |
| Comments allowed | No | Yes | Yes |
| Can appear in a public playlist | No | Yes | Yes |
| Sends upload notifications | No | No | Yes, unless you opt out |
The last row follows from the feed row and from YouTube Help's note that unlisted live streams "will not send notifications." YouTube can review videos under all three settings for ad suitability, copyright and abuse.
What does unlisted mean on YouTube?
Unlisted means a YouTube video plays for anyone who has its link, but YouTube never lists it. YouTube Help says unlisted videos "won't appear in the Videos tab of your channel homepage" or in search results. The exception: if someone adds your unlisted video to a public playlist, it can show up in search.
Viewers don't need a Google Account to watch an unlisted video, and comments stay on. The catch is in YouTube's own wording: "Anyone with the link can also reshare it." Treat an unlisted link like a spare house key, because you can't control who copies it.
Unlisted works well for:
- A cut you want a sponsor, editor or collaborator to review and comment on
- A video you share on your own website or inside an online course
- A clip meant for family, a class or a small community
- An old video you want off your channel without breaking links that already point to it

What is a private YouTube video?
A private YouTube video can only be seen by you and the people you choose. Per YouTube Help, private videos stay off your channel's Videos tab and out of search, and their link can't be shared with anyone else. Comments are off, so YouTube suggests unlisted if you want comments on a video that isn't public.
To share a private video, sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content. Click the video, open the Visibility box, choose Share privately, enter the email addresses and select Save.
Private suits anything that isn't ready for an audience: rough cuts, raw footage, personal clips and videos waiting for launch day. One caveat from YouTube Help: "YouTube systems and human reviewers may review private videos." Private hides a video from people, not from YouTube.

Which YouTube visibility setting notifies subscribers?
Only public YouTube videos notify subscribers. YouTube's comparison shows unlisted and private videos never appear in your subscribers' feed, and unlisted live streams "will not send notifications." A video uploaded as unlisted reaches only the people you send the link to.
Public is not a guarantee, either. A public upload can still go out quietly when:
- The box is unchecked. With "Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers" unchecked, subscribers get no alert and no feed entry. Our guide to that checkbox explains when to use it.
- You hit the cap. YouTube Help says viewers get "a maximum of 3 new video notifications from each channel in a 24 hour period."
- You switch it back too fast. Notifications typically take 10 to 20 minutes to send, and making a new video private stops them.
- It's set as made for kids. YouTube turns notifications off on made-for-kids content to comply with COPPA and other laws.
Even with all four in order, YouTube Help says new subscribers "automatically get personalized notifications," which can arrive hours after you publish. If fans keep missing uploads, read why subscribers aren't getting notified.

When to use unlisted, private or public
Use public for anything you want found and announced, unlisted for link-only viewing, and private for anything not ready for viewers. This table matches common creator jobs to a YouTube visibility setting.
| You want to... | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Get feedback from a sponsor or editor, with comments | Unlisted | Anyone with the link can watch and comment |
| Share a video on your site or in a course | Unlisted | It plays for anyone with the link but stays off your channel |
| Keep drafts, raw footage or personal clips | Private | Only you and invited people can watch |
| Launch a video at a set time | Private, then Schedule | It goes public, and alerts start, when you choose |
| Retire an old video but keep its links working | Unlisted | The link still plays, but the video leaves your channel and search |
| Reach as many viewers as possible | Public | Only public videos show in search, recommendations and subscriber feeds |

How to make a YouTube video unlisted or private
You change a video's visibility in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app, and you can switch it whenever you like. On a computer, YouTube Help lists these steps:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content from the left menu.
- Point to the video and click the down arrow under Visibility.
- Choose Public, Private or Unlisted, then select Save.
On a phone, open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture, then Your videos. Tap More next to the video, then Edit and Visibility, pick a setting and save. The YouTube Studio app works the same way from its Content tab.
New uploads default to public if you're 18 or older and private if you're 13 to 17. You can pick a different setting at the visibility step before you publish.

Launching later: why private beats unlisted
For a video you want announced later, upload it as private or scheduled, not unlisted. YouTube documents the private route twice. Scheduled publishing sets "a private video to go public at a specific time," and for batches, YouTube Help advises uploading as "Private" first, then publishing "each video at different times."
YouTube Help does not say whether switching an unlisted video to public sends notifications. Unlisted links also travel, because anyone who has one can reshare it before launch day.
Once the video is public, leave it public. Notifications typically take 10 to 20 minutes to finish sending, and switching to private in that window stops them. To pick the hour itself, see our guide to the best time to post on YouTube.

How fans hear about it once it goes public
When a video goes public, YouTube alerts only some of your subscribers. An email list gets the news on every public upload, because email doesn't depend on bell settings, Personalized timing or the three-a-day cap.
Sublark builds that list for you. Claim your channel, and fans join at sublark.com/your-channel with just an email address. Sublark watches your public uploads, so unlisted and private videos never trigger an email.
When a video goes public, including a scheduled one, Sublark sends your list an email alert for the new upload. With Auto-Send on, it goes out usually within the hour. Auto-Send is off by default, so until you switch it on, you approve each email first.
To see what fans see, open a channel page such as Mark Rober's, or browse creators already on Sublark.
Tell every fan when a video goes public
Claim your channel on Sublark. Fans get an email for each public upload, while your unlisted and private videos stay quiet.
Claim your channelThe bottom line
The unlisted vs private YouTube choice comes down to one question: should the link work for anyone who has it? Pick unlisted for link-only sharing with comments, private for drafts and launch prep, and public for anything you want subscribers told about.
Neither hidden setting alerts anyone, and public uploads reach only part of your audience through the bell. To reach every fan when a video goes public, claim your channel on Sublark. For the bigger picture, read the creator's guide to email and our plan for announcing a new video.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to make a YouTube video private or unlisted?
It depends on who should watch. Choose unlisted if people with the link should be able to watch and comment, such as a sponsor reviewing a cut or students in a course. Choose private if only you and a few invited people should see it, such as drafts or a video waiting for launch day. Anyone who has an unlisted link can reshare it, while a private video can't be watched through a shared link at all.
Do unlisted videos notify subscribers?
No. YouTube Help's privacy comparison shows that unlisted videos never appear in your subscribers' feed, and it says unlisted live streams will not send notifications. Private videos don't notify anyone either. Only public videos can alert subscribers, and only while "Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers" stays checked. If you want subscribers told about a video later, keep it private or scheduled until launch, because that is the route YouTube Help documents.
Can people find an unlisted YouTube video?
Not through YouTube's own listings. YouTube Help says unlisted videos stay off your channel's Videos tab and out of search results, with one exception: if someone adds your unlisted video to a public playlist, it can show up in search. Anyone who has the link can watch without a Google Account and can reshare it. Treat an unlisted link as semi-public, and use private for anything that truly has to stay hidden.
Does making a private video public notify subscribers?
Yes, as long as "Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers" stays checked. That is how YouTube's own launch tools work: scheduled publishing sets a private video to go public at a chosen time, and YouTube Help suggests uploading batches as private, then publishing each one separately. Subscribers on Personalized notifications may still get the alert hours later. YouTube Help doesn't document an unlisted-to-public switch, so private is the safer staging setting.
Can you comment on unlisted or private YouTube videos?
You can comment on unlisted videos but not on private ones. YouTube Help says comments are not available on private videos, and it suggests switching to unlisted if you want comments on a video that isn't publicly available. That makes unlisted the better setting for feedback rounds with an editor, a sponsor or a class. Public videos allow comments too, within your channel's comment settings.
Does Sublark email my fans about unlisted or private videos?
No. Sublark watches your channel's public uploads, so unlisted and private videos never trigger an email to your list. When a video goes public, including a scheduled one, Sublark emails the fans who joined on your Sublark page. With Auto-Send on, that email goes out usually within the hour. Auto-Send is off by default, so until you switch it on, you approve each email before it sends.
