Every chart of the best time to post on YouTube gives a different answer, and none of them has seen your audience. The hour you publish also matters less than most charts admit, because YouTube decides when most of your subscribers hear about a new video.

In this guide:

  • The best time to post on YouTube, according to 2026 data
  • How to find your own best time in YouTube Studio
  • Why YouTube decides when most subscribers get alerted
  • The best time to post YouTube Shorts
  • How to schedule a YouTube video for your best time
  • How far apart to space your uploads

The best time to post on YouTube, according to 2026 data

The best time to post on YouTube, according to Buffer's July 2026 study, is Sunday at 10 a.m. for long-form videos and Friday at 4 p.m. for Shorts. Buffer measured the median engagement of 1.8 million videos at different posting times. Buffer says its times "apply in your local time."

FormatBest dayNext best daysTop time slots
Long-form videosSundayTuesday, MondaySunday at 10 a.m.
ShortsFridaySaturday, ThursdayFriday at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Buffer also advises publishing long-form videos "one to two hours before your audience's peak activity window." That gives YouTube time to process the video before your viewers arrive.

Treat any chart as a first guess. A 2025 Analyzify guide, charting Buffer's earlier data, named Friday from 3 to 4 PM instead. Buffer itself warns that its times "may not be the right fit for your audience."

How to find your best time to post on YouTube in Studio

Your own best time to post on YouTube sits in one YouTube Studio report. YouTube Help says "When your viewers are on YouTube" shows "when your viewers are online across YouTube in the last 28 days." YouTube's analytics tips say these viewing reports can help you "determine what time and day is best for you to upload videos."

To open it:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Analytics from the left menu.
  3. Select Audience from the top menu.
  4. Find When your viewers are on YouTube and note the days and hours with the most activity.

Pick a publish time one to two hours before your biggest peak. Check the report again every month, because it only looks back 28 days and peak times shift. If your channel is too new to show much, start with the Buffer times above and adjust as your data builds.

Why YouTube decides when most subscribers get alerted

Even the best time to post on YouTube only sets the alert clock for some subscribers. For the rest, YouTube decides when, or whether, the alert arrives. YouTube Help says new subscribers "automatically get personalized notifications."

Here is how a new upload reaches each group, according to YouTube Help:

  • All notifications: YouTube's creator notification guide says these subscribers "are typically told within minutes" of you publishing. Sending every notification usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Personalized (the default): alerts "are sent at the optimal time for each individual subscriber," when YouTube thinks they are "most likely to watch." That can be hours after you publish.
  • All, but inactive: subscribers who "haven't watched or engaged with the channel in a while" only get alerts inside the app.
  • Scheduled digest: some viewers bundle a day's push alerts into one daily notification at a time they choose. It is off by default.
  • Quiet hours: the YouTube app mutes sounds and vibrations from 10 PM to 8 AM by default, and upload notifications "are sent silently by default."

So the clock you set matters most for your engaged fans on All. Studio's Subscriber bell notifications report shows what share of your subscribers get bell alerts at all. If that share is falling, read why bell notifications sent drop and what the 2026 bell change means for creators.

The best time to post YouTube Shorts

The best time to post YouTube Shorts, in Buffer's 2026 data, is Friday evening. Friday at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. took the top three slots, and Friday was the best day, followed by Saturday and Thursday.

Buffer found long-form videos and Shorts now have "very different peak posting times," so give each format its own slot.

The bell plays a smaller part for Shorts. YouTube Help says All covers "long-form uploads and live streams," and subscribers "may also get some personalized notifications for Shorts." For Shorts, timing is mostly about when your viewers are scrolling, not when an alert fires.

How to schedule a YouTube video for your best time

Scheduling lets you hit the best time to post on YouTube without being at your desk. YouTube Help says scheduled publishing sets "a private video to go public at a specific time."

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio, or open the YouTube app.
  2. Select Create, then Upload videos.
  3. Choose your file and enter the video details.
  4. Click the Schedule card.
  5. Set the date, time and time zone, then select Schedule.

To change the time later, open Content, select the video and edit its visibility while it is still Private.

One detail catches creators out. The "Published on" date under a video follows Pacific Time, so an early-morning slot in a zone ahead of Pacific can show the previous day's date.

Want an event instead? Choose Schedule, set the time and check Set as Premiere. Per YouTube Help, viewers who set a reminder get a notification "about 30 minutes before the Premiere and another when it starts." Shorts can't be Premieres.

How far apart should you space YouTube uploads?

Space your uploads so no more than three go out in any 24 hours. YouTube Help says viewers get "a maximum of 3 notifications from each channel in a 24 hour period," and that count includes uploads, live streams and Premieres.

Publishing in bulk is worse. If you publish more than three videos in a short period, YouTube "may temporarily stop sending notifications for 24 hours," even if all but one skip notifications. YouTube's fix is to upload them as Private, then publish each at a different time.

Keep each video public once it goes live, because switching it to Private soon after publishing stops the notifications. To release a minor upload quietly, uncheck "Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers," as our guide to that checkbox explains. The 3-notifications-per-day guide covers the cap from a viewer's side.

The one alert that follows your schedule: email

An email list is the one subscriber alert that arrives on your schedule, not YouTube's. There is no Personalized timing, no inactivity filter and no three-a-day cap. The email also waits in the inbox, so a fan who misses Sunday can still catch it on Monday.

Sublark builds that list for you. Claim your channel, and fans join at sublark.com/your-channel with just an email address. When you publish, Sublark emails them an alert for the new upload. With Auto-Send on, it goes out usually within the hour. beehiiv's State of Newsletters 2026 reports newsletter open rates "hitting 41%+."

Your Sublark dashboard adds timing controls the bell does not have:

  • Auto-Send Emails: off by default, so you approve each email before it goes out. Switch it on to send every upload email automatically.
  • Wait before sending: with Auto-Send on, hold each email for up to 24 hours. Publish late at night, and the email can land the next morning.
  • Include Shorts: choose whether Shorts trigger an email, or only regular videos.

To see what fans see, open a channel page such as Mark Rober's, or browse creators already on Sublark.

The bottom line

The best time to post on YouTube is the hour or two before your own viewers show up, and YouTube Studio already shows you when that is. Start with Sunday morning for long-form and Friday evening for Shorts, then let your Audience report overrule both.

Most subscribers still hear about your upload when YouTube decides. If fans aren't getting notified when you upload, claim your channel on Sublark and email them every new video. For the full playbook, read the creator's guide to email and our upload-day announcement plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to post on YouTube?

The best time to post on YouTube is one to two hours before your own viewers peak. Find that peak in YouTube Studio under Analytics, then Audience, in the "When your viewers are on YouTube" report, which covers the last 28 days. If your channel is new, Buffer's July 2026 study of 1.8 million videos found Sunday at 10 a.m. performed best for long-form videos. Treat that as a starting point, then test it against your own data.

What is the best day to post on YouTube?

Buffer's July 2026 analysis of 1.8 million videos found Sunday was the best day for long-form YouTube videos, followed by Tuesday and Monday. For Shorts, Friday came first, then Saturday and Thursday. Other guides built on older data still name Friday afternoon, so no single day wins for every channel. Your YouTube Studio Audience report shows which days your own viewers are most active, and that beats any general chart.

What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts?

Buffer's July 2026 study found YouTube Shorts do best in the evening, with Friday at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. as the top three slots. That is almost the opposite of long-form videos, which peaked on Sunday morning. Shorts alerts also work differently. YouTube Help says subscribers on All get alerts for long-form uploads and live streams, plus only some personalized alerts for Shorts, so the bell plays a smaller part.

Do subscribers get notified at the exact time I publish?

Only some of them. YouTube Help says subscribers on All notifications are typically told within minutes, and sending every notification usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Subscribers on Personalized, the default for new subscriptions, get alerts when YouTube thinks they are most likely to watch, which can be hours later. Subscribers on All who haven't watched in a while only get alerts inside the app. An email list sends on your timing instead.

Do scheduled YouTube videos notify subscribers?

Yes. A scheduled video stays private until the time you set, then goes public, and YouTube sends notifications when it publishes as long as "Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers" stays checked. Keep the video public afterward, because YouTube Help says switching it back to private soon after publishing stops the notifications. A scheduled Premiere also lets viewers set a reminder, which alerts them about 30 minutes before it starts and again when it begins.

What time zone should I use to schedule a YouTube video?

Use the time zone where most of your viewers live, then pick an hour that suits them. The Schedule card in YouTube Studio lets you set the date, time and time zone directly, so you don't have to convert by hand. One quirk to know: the "Published on" date under a video follows Pacific Time. A video scheduled for early morning in a time zone ahead of Pacific can show the previous day's date.
