In this guide:
- What YouTube says about unsubscribing viewers
- The 7 real reasons a subscription looks gone
- How to check if you are still subscribed
- How to fix it and stop it happening again

Is YouTube unsubscribing me from channels?
No. YouTube does not remove viewers from channels on its own, and it says so in writing. The answer sits in YouTube Help's subscriber FAQ, under the question "Does YouTube automatically unsubscribe viewers from channels?"
YouTube's Subscriptions team runs a full investigation on each report. "In every case we've looked at, we've verified that there's no issue causing viewers to be unsubscribed by YouTube," the page says. "Most of the time, we find that the viewer is still subscribed to the channel."
That is good news. Your subscription is almost always fine. Something else changed, and the seven causes below cover nearly every case.
7 reasons YouTube looks like it unsubscribed you
Each cause has a quick check. Work down the list in order, since the first three are the most common.
1. The channel is missing from your Home tab
YouTube's Home tab only shows videos YouTube thinks you want right now. YouTube Help says you are "not guaranteed to see all videos from your subscriptions on the Home tab." Many viewers who reported being unsubscribed were still subscribed. Their videos just stopped appearing on Home.
Check: open the Subscriptions feed, not Home. Our guide on why your Home feed ignores subscribed channels explains how the ranking works.

2. Notifications stopped, not the subscription
Silent alerts often feel like a lost subscription. Since 2026, YouTube stops push alerts for channels you have not watched in a while, even with the bell set to All. YouTube Help says you'll "only receive notifications for that channel inside the app."
YouTube also caps alerts at 3 per channel in 24 hours. The subscription is still there. Only the alerts went quiet. See why YouTube stopped notifying you for the full timeline.

3. You are signed in to a different account
YouTube subscriptions belong to an account, not a device. A work Google account, a family member's account, or a Brand Account each has its own separate list. Switch accounts and your favorite channels seem to vanish.
Check: tap your profile picture and confirm the account name before anything else.

4. You unsubscribed by accident
Accidental taps are real, and YouTube Help names them as a cause. YouTube added a confirmation pop-up for unsubscribing, but it notes the pop-up "isn't currently available on iPhone and iPad devices." One stray thumb on the Subscribed button can end a subscription on those devices.

5. The channel was deleted or terminated
A channel that no longer exists drops off every subscriber's list. Creators can delete their own channels. YouTube also terminates channels for repeated Community Guidelines violations or "a single case of severe abuse (such as predatory behavior, spam, or pornography)."
Mistakes happen too. In October 2024, YouTube said some channels were "incorrectly flagged for Spam and removed," then reinstated them, TechCrunch reported.
Check: search for the channel by name. If it is gone from search too, the channel was removed.
6. A browser extension changed your subscriptions
Some browser extensions change subscriptions without asking. YouTube Help warns that certain Chrome extensions subscribe people to channels without permission. Its symptoms include notifications from channels "you have unsubscribed from." If channels come and go from your list without you touching them, an extension is a likely suspect.
Fix: open chrome://extensions and remove anything you do not recognize or no longer use.

7. Your Subscriptions feed hid older videos
Long subscription lists bury uploads. YouTube Help says that if channels you follow "post often, it's possible that older videos will not show in the Subscriptions feed." A channel that posts weekly can sink out of view under a few daily uploaders.
Our guide to the Subscriptions feed not showing all videos covers the fix. Trimming your list helps too, as shown in how to manage YouTube subscriptions.
How to check if you are still subscribed
Checking your YouTube subscription status takes under a minute.
- Tap your profile picture and confirm you are on your usual account.
- Open the channel page. Subscribed means you are still subscribed. Subscribe means you are not.
- To see every channel at once, go to Subscriptions, then All in the app, or youtube.com/feed/channels on a computer.
- If the channel will not load at all, search for it by name. No result usually means it was deleted or terminated.
How to fix a lost YouTube subscription
Resubscribing fixes a lost subscription in one tap, but it also wipes your alert setting. YouTube Help says "if you unsubscribe and then re-subscribe to a channel, your notification settings will be reset."
- Tap Subscribe on the channel page.
- Tap the bell next to Subscribed and choose All if you want every upload.
- Remove unknown browser extensions so the problem does not come back.
- On iPhone or iPad, keep your thumb clear of the Subscribed button while scrolling.
YouTube Help also notes a limit of 75 new subscriptions per day and, in general, 2,000 channels in total. Hit the cap and new subscribe taps fail.

Find a channelMake your favorite channels independent of YouTube
The surest fix is an alert that does not live inside your YouTube account. Sublark emails you when a channel uploads, usually within the hour. Account switches, accidental taps, the bell reset and the inactive-viewer filter cannot touch it.
It takes a minute. Search the channel, enter your email address, and you are set. Fans use it for channels like MrBeast, Veritasium, Mark Rober and Marques Brownlee. For every other alert problem, start at our hub on YouTube notifications not working.

The bottom line
YouTube unsubscribing you from channels is almost always a lookalike problem. The channel is off your Home tab, the alerts went quiet, you are on another account, or the channel itself is gone. Check the list, resubscribe, reset the bell, and put an email alert on the channels that matter most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube automatically unsubscribe you from channels?
No. YouTube Help answers this question directly: YouTube does not automatically unsubscribe viewers. Its Subscriptions team investigates every report it gets, and in every case it found no issue causing viewers to be unsubscribed by YouTube. Most of the time the viewer was still subscribed. Other cases were accidental taps, videos missing from the Home tab, or a channel that no longer exists. Check your full subscription list before assuming anything was removed.
Why did a channel disappear from my YouTube subscriptions?
The most common reason is that the channel no longer exists. A creator can delete their own channel, and YouTube can terminate a channel for repeated Community Guidelines violations or a single case of severe abuse such as spam. Either way, the channel drops out of every subscriber's list. Other causes are an accidental unsubscribe, being signed in to a different account, or a browser extension that changed your subscriptions without asking.
How do I check if I am still subscribed to a YouTube channel?
Open the channel page and look at the button under its name. If it says Subscribed, you are still subscribed. If it says Subscribe, you are not. You can also see your full list on a computer at youtube.com/feed/channels, or in the app under Subscriptions, then All. Before you check, tap your profile picture and confirm you are signed in to the account you normally use, because each account has its own list.
Why do I keep getting unsubscribed from YouTube channels?
If it keeps happening, look for something on your side that repeats. A browser extension is the usual suspect: YouTube Help warns that some Chrome extensions change subscriptions without permission, so open chrome://extensions and remove any you do not recognize. Accidental taps are the other repeat cause, because the iPhone and iPad apps have no confirmation pop-up when you unsubscribe. Switching between accounts can also make channels seem to come and go.
Does resubscribing to a YouTube channel reset notifications?
Yes. YouTube Help says that if you unsubscribe and then resubscribe to a channel, your notification settings will be reset. After you subscribe again, tap the bell next to the Subscribed button and choose All if you want alerts for every upload. Even then, YouTube can hold back push alerts for channels you rarely watch, so pair the bell with an email alert for the channels you never want to miss.
