Subscribing to a YouTube channel takes one tap on a phone, a computer or a TV. Hearing about that channel's next upload is the harder part, because a new subscription gets only YouTube's "highlights" by default.

In this guide:

  • How to subscribe on a phone, a computer and a smart TV
  • Where the Subscribe button sits on each device
  • The one setting to change right after you subscribe
  • Why subscribers still miss new uploads
  • How to get an email when a subscribed channel uploads
  • Why you can't subscribe, and the fix for each case

How to subscribe to a YouTube channel on your phone

On a phone, open the YouTube app, sign in, and tap Subscribe below any video from the channel. The steps are the same on iPhone, iPad and Android, according to YouTube Help.

  1. Open the YouTube app, or go to m.youtube.com in your phone's browser.
  2. Sign in with your Google account.
  3. If you are watching one of the channel's videos, tap Subscribe below it.
  4. If you are scrolling the Home tab, tap the channel's round icon below a video, then tap Subscribe.

The button changes to Subscribed once it works. On Android, YouTube then suggests a few related channels you might also like.

How to subscribe to a YouTube channel on a computer

On a computer, sign in at youtube.com, open a video from the channel, and click Subscribe under the video player. Those are the exact three steps YouTube Help lists for a computer.

You can also subscribe from the channel page. Click the channel's name under any video, or search its @handle, and the channel page has its own Subscribe button near the top. Can't find the channel? Our guide on how to find a YouTube channel covers seven ways, even when you forgot the name.

How to subscribe to a YouTube channel on a smart TV

On a smart TV, play any video from the channel, press the up or down arrow on your remote to show the video details, and select Subscribe. That is the method in YouTube Help's TV guide, and it works on smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles that run the YouTube app.

If you cast videos from your phone, subscribe on the phone instead. YouTube Help says you can "subscribe to the channel directly from your phone" while the video keeps playing on the TV. Both devices need to be signed in to the same Google account.

Where the Subscribe button is on each device

The YouTube Subscribe button always sits next to the channel's name: under the video while you watch, or near the top of the channel page.

Don't confuse Subscribe with Join. Join is a paid channel membership with monthly payments and a minimum age of 18, per YouTube Help. Subscribe is free, and our guide to what happens when you subscribe explains what it does and does not do.

Right after you subscribe: set the bell to All

Right after you subscribe to a YouTube channel, tap the bell next to Subscribed and choose All. New subscriptions start on Personalized, and YouTube Help says it plainly: "By default, we'll only send you the highlights from the channel."

The bell has three settings, per YouTube's notification guide:

  • All: notifications for long-form uploads and live streams.
  • Personalized: notifications for "some regular uploads, Shorts, and live streams," chosen from your watch history and other signals.
  • None: no notifications from the channel.

One catch: if you unsubscribe and subscribe again, YouTube resets the bell to Personalized or None. Set it back to All each time. For phone permissions and the other settings involved, follow how to turn on YouTube notifications.

Why subscribing doesn't mean you'll see every upload

Subscribing puts a channel's new videos in your Subscriptions feed, but it does not guarantee an alert for each one. Three YouTube rules get in the way, and no bell setting overrides them.

  1. The daily cap. YouTube sends at most 3 notifications per channel in 24 hours, counting uploads, live streams and premieres.
  2. The inactive-viewer rule. YouTube Help says, "If you have selected All and haven't watched or engaged with the channel in a while, you'll only receive notifications for that channel inside the app." YouTube made this rule permanent on April 21, 2026, according to PPC Land.
  3. Made for kids channels. YouTube turns notifications off for channels whose audience is set as made for kids, and you can't change the bell.

The second rule hits hardest. The channels you love but watch only now and then are the ones that go quiet. Our explainer on why "All" no longer means all covers it in detail.

How to get an email when a channel you subscribe to uploads

The reliable fix is an email alert that does not depend on the bell. Sublark watches the channels you pick and usually emails you within the hour of each new upload, with no daily cap and no inactivity rule.

Setting it up takes under a minute:

  1. Search the channel by name, @handle or video link on Sublark. Searching @veritasium, for example, brings up Veritasium.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Get an email when the channel posts its next video.

It is free for viewers and needs no Google account. Some channels send a quick confirmation email first, and every alert has an unsubscribe link. It works for channels like MrBeast, Mark Rober, Marques Brownlee and Dude Perfect.

Can't subscribe to a YouTube channel? 5 reasons and fixes

When the YouTube Subscribe button won't work, one of five things is usually behind it.

  1. You are signed out. Subscribing needs a Google account, so the button asks you to sign in first. No account? See YouTube without a Google account for what still works.
  2. You hit the daily limit. An error that says "Too many subscriptions" means you reached YouTube's cap of 75 new channels per day. Try again tomorrow.
  3. You reached the total limit. Most accounts can subscribe to at most 2,000 channels, though YouTube says the limit grows with your own channel. Clear out old ones with our guide to managing YouTube subscriptions.
  4. You are already subscribed. The button reads Subscribed instead of Subscribe. Clicking it opens a menu with Unsubscribe, so leave it alone.
  5. You pressed Join. Join opens a paid membership checkout. Close it and look for Subscribe beside the channel name.

The opposite problem also happens. If channels you never chose show up in your list, YouTube Help says a browser extension may be subscribing you without your permission.

How to subscribe to a YouTube channel: the bottom line

Learning how to subscribe to a YouTube channel is the easy part: sign in, open a video or the channel page, and tap Subscribe. On a TV, press up or down on the remote first.

The step most people skip is the one that matters. Set the bell to All, then add a free email alert for the channels you never want to miss, so their next upload reaches you even when YouTube's alerts don't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it free to subscribe to a YouTube channel?

Yes. Subscribing to a YouTube channel is free and needs only a signed-in Google account. The paid option is a different button called Join, which starts a channel membership with monthly payments and requires you to be at least 18. If a checkout screen appears, you pressed Join, not Subscribe. Subscribing adds the channel's new videos to your Subscriptions feed and turns on Personalized notifications, and you can unsubscribe at any time at no cost.

Do you need an account to subscribe to a YouTube channel?

Yes. The Subscribe button asks you to sign in, and signing in to YouTube requires a Google account. That account does not need a Gmail address, because Google lets you sign up with an email you already use. If you would rather not make one, you can still follow a channel. Sublark emails you when the channel uploads and asks only for your email address, with no YouTube or Google sign-in.

How do I subscribe to a YouTube channel on my TV?

Play any video from the channel in the YouTube app on your TV. Press the up or down arrow on your remote to show the video details, then select Subscribe. This works on smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles. If you cast from your phone, you can subscribe from the phone while the video keeps playing on the TV, as long as both devices are signed in to the same Google account.

Why am I not getting notifications after I subscribed?

Because new subscriptions start on Personalized, which YouTube says sends only the channel's highlights. Tap the bell next to Subscribed and choose All. Even then, YouTube sends at most 3 notifications per channel in 24 hours, and if you have not watched a channel in a while, its alerts go only to the in-app inbox. Channels set as made for kids send none at all. For every upload, add a Sublark email alert.

How many YouTube channels can you subscribe to?

YouTube lets most accounts subscribe to a maximum of 2,000 channels, though the limit can grow with your own channel's subscribers and your account's age. You can also add only 75 new subscriptions per day, and going over shows a "Too many subscriptions" error. YouTube recommends staying under 5,000 subscriptions so your feed and channel list work well. If you are near the cap, unsubscribe from channels you no longer watch.

How do I subscribe to someone's YouTube channel?

Find their channel first, then tap Subscribe. The fastest way is their @handle: type youtube.com/@ followed by the handle, or search the handle on YouTube. You can also tap their name under a video they posted, or their picture on a comment they left. Once the channel page opens, the Subscribe button sits near the top beside the channel name. Then tap the bell and choose All.
